A small steel hangar may be less complex than a large airport maintenance base, but it still needs disciplined documentation before container loading. Once the main frames, purlins, bracing, door parts, bolts, and cladding are on the water, missing information is difficult to correct quickly. The owner may have a slab ready, a local crane booked, and an aircraft or equipment schedule waiting for cover. A document checklist is therefore not office formality. It is the bridge between fabrication and a safe, predictable erection sequence.

Begin with the general arrangement drawing. It should show clear span, bay spacing, eave height, ridge height, roof slope, door opening, side personnel doors, window or louver positions, and the exact orientation of the hangar on the site. The drawing should identify the front apron side and any future extension side. If the hangar door is a sliding, folding, or hydraulic type, the structural support and clearance envelope must be visible. A door that fits on paper but conflicts with bracing or gutters will delay commissioning.

The foundation information should be checked next. The package should include column reactions, anchor bolt plan, base plate details, grout requirement, and tolerance notes. Small hangars are often built in locations where the civil contractor is separate from the steel supplier. That separation is manageable only if reactions and bolt positions are final before concrete is poured. The owner should confirm drawing revision numbers and make sure the civil team is not using an earlier preliminary plan.

Member identification is essential for container loading. Each column, rafter, tie, purlin, girt, brace, and door support should have a mark that appears on the drawing, the packing list, and the physical label. Labels should survive sea freight and site handling. For remote projects, it is helpful to pack steel by erection sequence where possible: anchor bolts and templates first, primary frames by grid, secondary members by roof or wall zone, and cladding bundles separated by elevation. Good packing cannot fix poor drawings, but it makes good drawings usable on site.

Before shipment, request bolt schedules and connection notes from the prefab steel building factory. The schedule should distinguish high-strength bolts, ordinary bolts, self-drilling screws, expansion bolts, and door hardware. Connection drawings should show plate orientation, bolt quantity, and any field welding requirement. If the local erection contractor expects bolted assembly and the drawing requires site welding, the mismatch must be solved before the container is sealed.

Cladding documents require more attention than many owners expect. Roof sheets, wall sheets, ridge caps, corner trims, flashing, gutters, downpipes, sealant, skylights, and insulation should be shown in a layout. The direction of sheet laps should consider prevailing wind and rain. For a hangar near the sea, fastener material and washer quality should be specified. Water ingress around a large hangar door is often caused not by the door itself but by incomplete flashing coordination at the jamb and head.

The checklist should also include certificates and maintenance information. Steel grade certificates, coating records, welding inspection summaries, galvanizing certificates if applicable, and paint touch-up instructions should be transmitted with the shipping documents. The owner may not read every certificate during erection, but these documents matter for insurance, authority review, resale, and long-term maintenance. A small hangar is still a capital asset, and its records should be kept like records for any other building.

Finally, hold a pre-loading review call. Confirm final drawings, packing sequence, container count, spare parts, document language, consignee details, and the process for reporting missing or damaged items. Ask the supplier to photograph each bundle and container stage. These photographs help the receiving team plan unloading and provide evidence if freight damage occurs. A steel hangar succeeds when the site team can identify parts, set frames, close the envelope, and commission the door without guesswork. The checklist is the owner’s simplest tool for making that happen.

It is also useful to list the tools and plant expected on site. A small hangar may still require a crane with enough reach, scissor lifts, torque wrenches, temporary bracing, and safe access for roof work. If these items are not available locally, the erection sequence should be adjusted or the owner should arrange rental before containers arrive. Documentation is strongest when it connects drawings with the actual means of assembly.
